UNM Letter from Julia Shang, Student Government Association President

Dear Graduating Class of 2020,

The path of higher education is not an easy one, especially in a rural community like Taos where resources are limited and options are few. It takes a lot of sacrifice and determination for a student to persevere from the first day of classes to the last, even under normal circumstances.

But this year has been far from ordinary.

The world as we know it has been turned wayward by the unexpected outbreak of COVID-19. With each new day comes a new update on how we all must adapt to the constant change. We long for the normality of the past, and fear for the uncertainty of the future. However, you have not let this awful surprise distract you from your academic goals.

Now you should stand with pride. You have become beacons of hope in this dark storm. Even after overcoming the common struggles of being a student, you have overcome an even greater setback with the onset of a global pandemic.

Congratulations on graduating with the diploma, certificate or degree you worked so vigilantly for. Let this not be a farewell in terms of academic success, but a welcoming to the bright future ahead of you.

Sincerely,

Julia Shang, SGA President, UNM-Taos
