A motorcyclist badly hurt in a crash Saturday morning (Nov. 3) died later of his injuries at Holy Cross Hospital.
A motorcyclist who was badly hurt after his bike rear ended a vehicle in Taos Saturday morning (Nov. 3) died later of his injuries at Holy Cross Hospital.
Witnesses told police Justin Gutierrez, 28, was riding his motorcycle south on Paseo del Pueblo Sur at a "high rate of speed" and "weaving between traffic" when he apparently lost control and his bike collided with the back of a Chrysler van at the intersection of Paseo del Cañon West around 8 a.m., according to Taos Police Chief David Trujillo.
Gutierrez, of El Prado, was unresponsive when law enforcement and Taos medics arrived. An emergency room nurse from Holy Cross Hospital was already on scene giving aid to Gutierrez, according to Trujillo.
Taos police were assisted by the Taos County Sheriff's Office and other agencies to secure the crash scene, Trujillo said.
Taos County Emergency Services Chief Chris Medina confirmed the injured man was transported to Holy Cross Hospital where he died of his injuries. Medina said the man wasn't wearing a helmet.
Two women in the van drove themselves to Holy Cross Hospital for treatment of neck and back pain caused by the collision, according to Trujillo.
Trujillo said officers determined no alcohol was involved and that excessive speed and reckless driving contributed to the crash.
