Lower Hondo fire causes minor damage

Posted

A residential home in lower Arroyo Hondo north of Taos sustained minor damage from a fire Monday morning (June 1) apparently caused by embers from a wood stove. The house was unoccupied at the time.

The Hondo-Seco Volunteer Fire Dept. responded to the one-alarm call at 46 Old State Road 3 in Hondo Seco at approximately 9:30 a.m. Deputies from the Taos County Sheriff's Office and a unit from Taos County Emergency Medical Services also answered the call.

According to Taos County Sheriff's deputy Sylvia Trujillo-Chacon, the owners of the property could not immediately be identified.

Nick Jaramillo, liaison officer for Hondo-Seco VFD who was on the scene, said firefighters extinguished the blaze in short order without incident. He added that it's not uncommon for wood-stove users to shovel out embers they believe to be cold, only to have them reignite later.
