Letter: The Second Bill of Rights

The Second Bill of Rights was proposed by President Franklin Roosevelt in his State of the Union address in January 1944.

He called them an “economic bill of rights,” which included the right to work, food, clothing, housing, medical care, social security and education. He said these rights would guarantee American security.

And, he made this statement in the midst of World War II.

Contrast these ideas with what President Trump has declared as part of his agenda—a several billion dollar wall on our border with Mexico to keep out would-be immigrants and increasing by several billion dollars our already inflated defense budget. Meanwhile, he is giving our most wealthy citizens large tax cuts. So, while the rich get richer under Trump, millions of our average citizens are struggling to get enough food, clothing, housing and medical care to lead a decent life.

President Roosevelt came from a wealthy family, but he knew what common citizens needed and he set out to provide it to them. President Trump has been shameful in his willful disregard of our common citizens. He is an egomaniac who has no empathy for others, especially the less fortunate. He certainly does not deserve to be reelected in 2020.

Norm Ferguson lives in Taos.
