Kit Carson Electric Co-op gets nod as top solar utility

Posted

Taos' local electric cooperative was among four finalists for "Utility of the Year," an award bestowed by the Colorado Solar Industries Association.

Though Kit Carson didn't come out on top of the Solar Power Mountain West Awards, it was up against big names in New Mexico's northern neighbor: Xcel Energy Colorado, Colorado Springs Utilities and Fort Collins Utilities.

Michael Santistevan, public relations coordinator of the co-op, told The Taos News the nomination was a "big deal," considering a New Mexico co-op stood out among utility companies in another state.

The co-op is in the midst of an ambitious plan to get the electric grid in this part of New Mexico to be entirely supplied by solar energy during the daylight hours by 2022.
