Kit Carson, Comcast offer free hotspots around Taos County


Area wireless companies are stepping up to help Taos County  and other parts of Northern New Mexico stay connected during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Kit Carson Internet is expanding the availability of free wi-fi spots and Comcast is also offering to make public hotspots free plus skipping disconnections and late fees for 60 days.

In a statement, the cooperative said,  “KCI understands the difficult times families, businesses and individuals are facing during the spread of COVID-19, we are doing everything in our power, to offer services that our communities need get through these hard times.”

In the early days of the outbreak, KCI installed fourteen Wi-Fi hotspots in their service territory for the public to utilize. The company has added four more, to serve Taos and Picuris Pueblo.

“Kit Carson Electric Cooperative wants to ensure our communities, seniors, tribes, students and public have free hot-spot internet access they need to get through this difficult time,” said  Luis A. Reyes Jr., CEO of KCEC, in a statement.

The passwords for the hotspot locations are:

The hotspots will be available from 7 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Meanwhile, Comcast announced it is increasing the speed available on Internet Essentials and giving customers two months of free service. Comcast, in a statement, said it is making public WiFi hotspots free for everyone, pausing data plans, “and committing to no disconnects or late fees for 60 days.
