In Brief: Health care open enrollment period ends Friday

With the open enrollment period coming to an end Friday for individual insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act, the Office of Superintendent of Insurance encourages consumers to shop smart by reviewing health care needs and weighing all of their options.

A new, free tool provided by the office helps consumers look at options for plans that are sold on the exchange and off the portal. Plans outside the ACA portal don't qualify for federal subsidy assistance but might still be a better option for some families.

"Understanding your options including the total out-of-pocket impact each type of plan provides is key when considering a health insurance plan," said Superintendent John G. Franchini. "We have heard that consumers may consider limited-benefit plans due to cost, but this year there are so many affordable plans for individuals and families who qualify for financial assistance, I encourage consumers to carefully consider all of your options by using our new tool before selecting a plan."
