Property owners and managers are invited to a discussion next week to learn how to make a house or apartment work smoothly as a monthly rental.
The discussion, a collaboration between DreamTree Project and the Northern Regional Housing Authority, is happening Wednesday, May 8, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Kit Carson Electric Cooperative Boardroom, located at 118 Cruz Alta Road, in Taos.
Specifically, landlords will learn about how to take advantage of the Housing Choice Voucher program, also called Section 8. The program helps low-income and disabled people afford housing that would otherwise be economically out of reach.
"This event is an opportunity to get some information about the benefits of becoming a Section 8 landlord, [including] guaranteed rental income in the form of the check coming from [the housing authority] every month, properly vetted tenants and free inspections every two year," said Andy Jones, who is helping coordinate the event for DreamTree Project.
In years past, the Taos area housing authority has had to return unused Section 8 vouchers due to a lack of participating landlords.
Michael Cabral, acting executive director of the housing authority, will be discussing the program during a radio show on KNCE 93.5 FM on Friday (May 23) from 5 to 6 p.m.
