Firefighters from several Taos County departments responded to a fire at a 3,500-square-foot home on Tune Drive in El Prado early Thursday morning (June 18).

Taos Fire Chief Eddy Joe Abeyta said fire departments responded when flames and smoke were reported at the home between 1:30-2 a.m. Abeyta said the flames spread to the timber roof of the large home north of Taos.

Asked whether the house was occupied at the time, Abeyta said, "It sounded like there was a gentleman in there and he had already gotten out." Abeyta was not on the scene himself, and so could not confirm whether anyone was injured in the fire.

While the cause of the fire is still undetermined, Taos County Fire Chief Michael Cordova said at the scene that he was told oil rags may have been involved in starting the blaze.

This is a developing story.
