Opinion: Hope for beleaguered river

Once again, a New Mexico river, the beautiful and beleaguered Gila, tops the list of America's Most Endangered Rivers. It's distressing that, as the 21st century grinds on, a little group of locals still dreams of turning a vanishing natural icon into an artificial system for delivering them a few dollars.

To me, the proper way to view the Gila is in its role as an exemplar for what all Southwestern rivers once were.

There are two things in this sad situation to give an old river runner some hope: Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham's veto of the budget authority to advance the ill-considered development scheme and the Gila Conservation Coalition's decades-long struggle to exempt just one magnificent stream from needless destruction.
