'High-speed' rollover closes Highway 285

Authorities have temporarily closed Highway 285 west of Taos to provide clearance for an emergency helicopter that will life-flight a man who was injured during a single-car rollover Friday afternoon (July 14).

Reports from Taos Central Dispatch indicate the accident occurred around 1 p.m. near mile marker 370. The driver of the vehicle reportedly "swerved to avoid collision with an oncoming vehicle." One passenger was also in the vehicle at the time of the accident, according to the reports.

Bystanders extracted the two victims from the wreckage as fire and medical units arrived on the scene. The man was "awake and alert," but in "considerable pain," according to initial reports. The other victim, a woman, did not immediately appear to have suffered any serious injuries.

Law enforcement is assisting with a temporary closure of the roadway as a helicopter dispatched from TriState Careflight prepares to touch down to transport the male victim for further assessments.
