Letter: Garbage bills going up

Posted

Neighbors,

Taos residents will be shocked to see that their garbage rates will about double next year. In my case, I put out my garbage once every 4-6 weeks, and in three years the container has never been full. Some of my neighbors share containers, so they don't have to put out garbage every week, even though they get charged for pickup.

There must be a simple way to reduce the collection costs. I can think of variable size containers and variable collection times. Businesses can now order different size containers in Taos, and this was the norm for residences in my previous town, where they have container sizes from 12 - 96 gallon.

Waste Management has computer systems in their trucks (at least in some cities) that allow specialized pickup. They could charge us only when there is a container to pick up, or manage the routes to pick up weekly, biweekly or monthly.

It would be nice to reward those residents who generate less waste.
