Taos Tiger golfer Josh Fambro tied for second place in the state at the Class 4A championship Tuesday (May 14) at the Piñon Hills golf course in Farmington.
At the state tournament, golfers shoot two full rounds of 18 holes over two days. Their scores for the two days are combined, and the golfer with the lowest score wins.
This year, that was Aidan Thomas of St. Pius X, a long-time friend and golf buddy of Fambro. Thomas won with 150 strokes, six over par. Tied with Fambro was Tay Hwang of Albuquerque Academy. Places 3-6 went to Los Alamos Hilltoppers, making Fambro the only golfer from one of last year's 4A schools to finish in the top six under the new redistricting.
Fambro's combined score for the two days was 152 strokes, eight over par: a 77 on Monday (May 13) and a 75 on Tuesday (May 14).
Taysea Powell of Artesia tied Thomas' score of 150 strokes over the two days, winning the girls' championship by three strokes over Jessica Osden of Los Alamos. Third place was 13 strokes behind Osden.
Caitlin Tafoya of Taos finished 27th of the 52 girls in the state who qualified. Tafoya shot a 99 Monday and a 96 on Tuesday for a total of 195.
