Former county assessor announces run for commission seat

Posted

My name is Darlene Vigil and I am writing to announce my run for the Taos County Commission District 3 seat.

I am a lifelong resident of Taos and feel so fortunate to have had the privilege to grow up in such a unique and beautiful community. My love for this community, my desire to serve the public and my experience in county government have brought me to this point.

I had the honor to serve the people of Taos County as Taos County assessor for eight years from 2007 until 2014. I first started in the assessor's office in 1983 and worked in a number of positions in the office until I felt I had gained the experience and knowledge to run for assessor.

I worked a total of 31 years in county government. Although my term ended in 2014, my desire to serve the community has not lessened. Since 2014, I have remained active in the community, serving on several boards including the Taos County Advisory Committee, Alianza Agri-Cultura de Taos, the Ranchos Neighborhood Association and the Holy Cross Hospital Auxiliary.

I share the concerns and passion for the issues so many of us living in Taos face. Our urgent need for affordable housing, opportunities for our youth to stay in the community, the strength and stability of our hospital, the state of our roads, the care of our elders, the protection of our lands, waters and agricultural heritage, the care of our homeless community members, our need for a thoughtful approach to growth and sustainable, diversified economic development and living wages are all among the issues I will continue to dedicate myself to the community should I be elected.

I don't have the answers to all these issues, but I believe in the wisdom of our community, the value of listening to each other and the amazing things we can accomplish when we give space for healthy conversation, respectful disagreement and treating others as we would like to be treated. If elected as District 3 county commissioner, I will dedicate myself to research and prayer on the issues we face, but most importantly, I will dedicate myself to being available to you, our community members, to ensure your voices, your needs and your wisdom are represented in our local government.

As District 3 commissioner, I will be adopting an annual budget, approving tax levies and enacting ordinances to provide for the health, safety, welfare and prosperity of our community. I commit to be the person who tries to keep peace at the table, positively contributes to a solution, while always remembering who I represent and why I serve.

Local government is the voice of the people - it's the reason why government exists. I want to be your voice at the table, to represent you and what matters to you. I ask that you allow me to use my experience in county government, my heart for public service and my love for our community to work for you.

Over the coming months, I will be knocking on your doors and hosting listening sessions throughout the district in order to hear about your needs, concerns and ideas so that, if elected, I may represent your voices in the commission chambers.

I humbly and boldly ask for your vote in the upcoming June election.

Darlene Vigil is candidate for Taos County commissioner, District 3.
