The first day of the 2017 Taos Mountain Balloon Rally included a ride into the skies over Taos aboard the Toucan Pilot balloon, piloted by Ken Wolcott.

On board were sponsor Stuart Jones, whom many longtime Taos residents may recall from the early days of KKIT-Am radio, and Tempo editor Rick Romancito.

Although a few balloons lifted off from the official launch field on Albright Street, Toucan Pilot took off from a paring lot off Salazar Road. The flight conditions were optimal with little wind and partly cloudy skies. Landing was in the soccer field at Ranchos Elementary School off State Road 518.
