Five apply for 8th Judicial District judge seat in Raton

The 8th Judicial District Court received five applications by the March 11 deadline for a vacancy left by Judge Sarah Backus, who retired in late February.

The Judicial Nominating Committee will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 26 at the 8th Judicial Court in Colfax County to evaluate applicants for the position. The meeting is open to the public and public comment will be accepted at the beginning.

Whomever is selected will serve in the Raton office of the district.

The applicants are:

Merrie Loretta Chappell, a family law attorney and certified mediator who has a private practice in Albuquerque;

Timothy Roland Hasson, a senior prosecutor currently with the 8th Judicial District Attorney's Office;

Melissa Kennelly, a Taos attorney;

Jeffrey Alan Shannon, a Taos magistrate judge who won election to a second term in 2018; and

Sherri Marie Trevino, who has served as an assistant district attorney for the 2nd Judicial District Attorney's Office.
