Taoseños, county residents and visitors crowded the historic downtown Taos Plaza for the opening evening of Las Fiestas de Taos Friday (July 21). Catalina Rio Fernandez, a Ranchos de Taos native, and her flamenco dancers entertained the gathering while the Fiesta Mass was underway at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church nearby. The 2016 and 2017 Fiesta courts walked to the plaza following Mass to formally open Fiestas. The theme this year is "God, Family, Friends and Community." Dancing continued until after 10 p.m.
The children's parade begins at 9:30 a.m. today (July 22) at Enos Garcia Elementary School followed by performances throughout the day and the Grand Baile tonight. Taos News will be livestreaming periodically throughout the day on Facebook.
