Enjoy solstice walk at Bandelier National Park

Posted

If you are looking for a stunning and unusual way to celebrate the shortest day of the year and the return of the light, Bandelier National Monument is once again hosting guided winter solstice walks on Saturday (Dec. 21).

Choose a sunrise walk at 7 a.m. or an afternoon walk at 1:30 p.m.

"Many peoples all over the world have recognized the solstices and built markers into structures or found them in the surrounding landscape," according to information from the National Park Service. "The Ancestral Pueblo people in Frijoles Canyon may have built parts of Tyuonyi, the large pueblo on the canyon bottom, in alignment with the sunrise and sunset of the winter solstice. The ranger walks will greet the sunrise and sunset to view the possible alignments."

Participants for both walks will meet in front of the visitor center in Frijoles Canyon. Visitors do not need to sign up in advance for the walk but should dress extra warmly in layers that can be taken off as temperatures rise. If a storm rolls in, the walks will be held Sunday (Dec. 22).

Unless a storm forces a closure, Bandelier's trails and parking area will be open through the holidays. The Visitor Center, Western National Parks Association park store and administrative offices in Frijoles Canyon will be closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. The café, Sirphey in the Canyon, is scheduled to open March 2020.

All regular park entrance fees apply.

No pets are allowed on trails at Bandelier.

In 2020, all national parks including Bandelier will offer fee free days on the following dates:

• Jan. 20 - Martin Luther King Jr. Day

• April 18 - First Day of National Park Week/National Junior Ranger Day

• Aug. 25 - National Park Service Birthday

• Sept. 26 - National Public Lands Day

• Nov. 11 - Veterans Day

Directions: Near Los Alamos, off State Road 502.

For details or information, contact the Bandelier Visitor Center at (505) 672-3861 ext. 517, check the website at nps.gov/band or follow the park Facebook page at BandelierNPS.
