An elderly man died at Holy Cross Hospital early Saturday morning (June 22) after he was a struck by a vehicle just south of the intersection of State Road 518 and Paseo del Pueblo Sur in Ranchos de Taos.
The man has not been identified, according to a press release prepared by Taos County Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe, which said the man was wearing dark clothing when he entered the poorly lit southbound lane of Paseo del Pueblo Sur.
Hogrefe said the man wasn't carrying identification and "was likely under the influence of alcohol."
The vehicle involved in the crash was driven by a woman, who said she didn't see the man in the roadway, but turned around when she realized she had struck something.
She found the man lying in the road and reported the incident to Taos Central Dispatch, which called medics to the scene who transported the injured man to Holy Cross.
Hogrefe said that although the woman driver was not intoxicated and did not appear to have been driving recklessly after an initial investigation, he said she was arrested for driving on a revoked license without an interlock system, a breathalyzer device that tests a driver's blood-alcohol level before allowing their vehicle to start.
The crash remains under investigation.
This is a developing story.
