Dan’s Flooring and interior design business in Ranchos de Taos has kept Taos – and Northern New Mexico in general – warm and stylish for three decades as of last August. The business, located at 7237 State Road 518, was founded in 1988 by husband and wife Dan and Christina Gonzales. Son Jeremiah Gonzales is also a co-owner as well.
Window coverings are a big part of Dan’s Flooring business, Jeremiah said last December, because of the energy-saving benefit to keeping heating and cooling costs down in our high-altitude environs.
“It keeps the heat in during winter and out in the summer,” Gonzales said about the wide variety of Hunter Douglas window coverings they carry, citing Duettes and roller shades for example. Dan’s Flooring also offers shutters, slide panels and VertiglidesTM, which are made for sliding doors. They are also available motorized.
“It is so nice to be able to control your shades with a touch of a button,” Gonzales said, demonstrating on a display case both a digital power-rise and a power-slide functionality. “Hunter Douglas offers a seven-year warranty on all their shades, making it the best warranty in the business.”
“It’s also sometimes the last chance to pop a color in your home,” he said about the various color schemes available, noting too, that window coverings eliminate that sense of “living in a fish bowl. It increases privacy and adds energy savings at the same time.”
LVP, cork and hardwoods
As the business name suggests, flooring products take up by far most of the real estate in their Ranchos de Taos showroom. Area rugs, carpeting, ceramic and porcelain products, and flooring laminates, vinyls, natural stone and wood are all featured.
One of the most popular today is the LVP – Luxurious Vinyl Plank with cork backing, “We are the only store in Taos that offers Cortec. It is 100 percent waterproof. It also gives a quietness, warmth and peace of mind because it is going to last.”
LVPs have pretty much taken over, he said because it can be DIY (do-ityourself). “Most of the LVP is a tongue-and-groove locking installation. It can be floated or glued down and it comes in a wide variety of looks and colors. We have a lot of budget-friendly options.” Portuguese cork is really popular he said, “because it’s eco-green. It doesn’t mold. It’s a little more versatile – not as sensitive as wood or stone, and its more resilient and pet friendly, and it’s also more soft to step on,” he said, noting too, that it’s a sustainable product. “No trees die to make it. The cork is peeled off and the tree keeps growing.
“We put a lot in workout rooms, bedrooms and kitchens. It holds up well to traffic, and it can give you the look of hardwood floors.”
Hardwood shoppers need look no further. Of all their offerings, Homer Wood products are gorgeous hardwoods handmade by the Amish.
But when it comes to tiles, Jeremiah said Dan’s Flooring is the go-to place – from flooring to backsplashes, bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and more.
“We represent some of the best tile suppliers in the nation. We have a wide variety to choose from. We carry a beautiful line of Listellos for kitchen and bathrooms. We can do cash-and-carry or full installation, whichever the customer chooses. We have many contractors who send their customers to our showroom. They love the convenience of a onestop showroom.
“Customers appreciate that we can take care of all their needs for their homes or businesses. From carpet, tile, wood, LVP, area rugs and window coverings, Dans Flooring can supply it all.”
Mohawk brand carpet is the brand they like the best because it has all-pet-protection built in. “It’s like a Scotch GuardTM has been soaked into the fiber,” he said. “It can be cleaned up with hot water. There is also a carpet guide that comes with it that says what to do depending on the situation or what kind of stain it is.”
Another reason for Mohawk is that it offers a “silk collection” – “It’s the softest synthetic material on the market,” he said, “and it’s the nicest of the high-end material choices. It has the softest fiber and is our number- one seller.”
For people looking for a natural fiber, they offer multiple brands of wool carpet, which can also be custom-sized area rugs.
Surprisingly the entry-level wool carpets have similar price points as their mid-range carpets – a great choice for people with different allergies or anyone sensitive to synthetics. It too is a good choice because it’s a natural and green product.
Dans Flooring and Window Coverings have been in business for 30 years, supplying goods and services to Taos and surrounding communities,” Gonzales said in an email. “We are very grateful to all of our customers and strive to continue servicing our community."
