Commission selects Dan Barrone to fill District 42 seat

Taos County commissioners have selected Taos Mayor Dan Barrone to fill the District 42 House of Representatives seat in the New Mexico Legislature.

The seat was left vacant after Roberto "Bobby" Gonzales, who had held the elected position for years, was recently appointed by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham to serve out the state Senate term of the late Sen. Carlos Cisneros.

The county commission held a Monday (Dec. 30) meeting in which they heard presentations from four potential candidates about their interest in the position.

Barrone was joined on the applicant stand by Bob Romero, Kristina Ortez, executive director of the Taos Land Trust, as well as Taos County Commission Chairman Mark Gallegos, who also is mayor of the village of Questa.

During the meeting, Barrone said he would not step down as mayor if he was selected by the commission for the appointment.

“I think it’s about working together,” Barrone said during the meeting. “If you don’t work together with the other representatives, you won’t get a bill passed.”

Barrone’s only dissenting vote was Commissioner Candyce O’Donnell. Despite being a candidate for the representative position, Gallegos did not recuse himself from the votes.

Barrone will serve as the District 42 representative until December 31, 2020. He will have to run for his seat in the upcoming elections if he wants to retain it.
