As the morning sun spilled across the valley on Saturday (Aug. 24), Taos High and Middle school harriers ran against each other in an intersquad meet that serves as a warmup to the cross-country season and a bit of fun.
Coach Bruce Gomez, coordinated the 27th - or 28th - year of the meet. "It's been so many years I can't remember," he joked as the runners warmed up along a dirt road in the Weimer foothills.
Gomez separated the runners into teams, each with names that engendered a few laughs before the 2-mile competition began: Mileage Patrol, Vegetarian Club and Carbo Raiders. Gomez explained the point system to everyone gathered. "Cross-country is probably the only sport besides golf where the lowest score wins," he said.
Yvette Cortez was among the parents at the event. She was anxious to see how a summer training regime paid off for her son, Eddie Duran, who was injured last year. "He trained different this summer," Cortez said. "More swimming and weight training."
The results were clear as Duran sailed along the course and crossed the finish looking barely out of breath.
The first big test of the season for Duran and his teammates will be a home cross-country meet Sept. 14 as Taos hosts a meet beginning at Kit Carson Park for at least a dozen teams of middle and high schoolers from across the state. The 8 a.m. meet is preceded by a 5 kilometer citizen's run at 7:30 a.m. that is open to the public.
