The Taos County planning department has received no updated application for a proposed Family Dollar store in Ranchos de Taos.
Earlier this year, a Texas-based developer proposed to build an 8,000 square-foot Family Dollar in Ranchos de Taos on 1.2 acres where the Taos RV Park is now. The store would be on the west side of Paseo del Pueblo Sur, just north of the intersection with State Road 518 -- located across the street and less than half a mile away from its competitor, Dollar General.
While a developer submitted an initial application to Taos County, an updated application required by the planning department has not yet reached their desks, according to a Nov. 22 interview with Rudy Perea, a county planner.
Without an updated application, county staff cannot move forward with reviewing the project. Nor can staff schedule a hearing for a special use permit before the Taos County Planning Commission, the body that's responsible for either granting or denying such permits.
Dollar stores are geared toward low- and middle-income people. The town of Taos has three, while Questa and Peñasco each have a dollar store.
7B Building & Development, the Texas company behind the project, told The Taos News in July his company would also submit an application for a Family Dollar in El Prado. It would be the third dollar store proposal in El Prado in recent years. But a formal application for that project hasn't been submitted to the county's planning department either.
