It was a basketball marathon at the Minipit in Questa Friday (Jan. 18) with four games that started at 1 p.m. and wrapped up shortly before 10 p.m. The gym was filled with spectators there to see the basketball teams play Cimarron.
The varsity girls game started around 6:45 p.m. The Cimarron Lady Rams got ahead early. It was 8-0 after two minutes and 21-9 with 1:54 left in the first quarter. A last-second basket by the Lady Rams closed the first period with a score of 26-16.
Three Ladycats were in Las Cruces for a Cheer competition, leaving five from the varsity squad to take on the whole Cimarron team. Scoring in the second quarter was quieter, especially for Questa. The Ladycats did what they could to stay engaged on the task at hand as the gulf between the scores continued to grow. At the final buzzer it was 74-41, Cimarron.
Perhaps as the season progresses they will find that their training becomes increasingly accessible and the nuts-and-bolts mechanics of the game will flow more easily.
"It's muscle memory," said Ladycat head coach Michael Romero. "Training is the key," he said. "When the time comes that you need it, it has to be automatic."
The crowd noise noticeably increased when the Wildcats took the court. They got on the board first and keep a little distance between themselves and the Rams, ending the first quarter ahead 13-10 including two 3-pointers from Josiah Griego and one from Dominic Torrez.
The intensity continued in the second. Each drive and every foul drew volume from the crowd. Though most were cheering for Questa, Cimarron brought a sizable contingent of their own. With 10 more points for Questa and 14 for Cimarron, the half ended with Cimarron ahead by 1 point, 23-24.
A low-scoring but still tense third quarter closed with 32 points for each team.
The Cimarron bench had 12 men total, three more than Questa. Perhaps that was part of the difference in the fourth quarter. While the Rams dialed it up and had their highest-scoring quarter of the game, adding 17 more to their 32, the Wildcats couldn't keep up, adding only 6.
The final score was 49-38, Cimarron.
Questa is scheduled to play Taos Tuesday (Jan. 22) after this section goes to press. Then they visit Escalante Jan. 24 and host Mora Jan. 26.
