Candlelight vigil planned on Taos Plaza tonight

The Interfaith/Intercultural Alliance of Taos is sponsoring a Peace and Justice Vigil at the historic Taos Plaza on tonight (Aug. 20) 7:30-8:30 p.m.. "We have been deeply grieved by the events in Charlottesville," said a statement from the alliance. The group has invited representatives from Taos Pueblo and all of the religious groups in the county "to give words of hope or prayer-and songs will be sung-candles will be lighted."

It is the second candlelight vigil in the plaza since a clash between white supremacist protestors and counter-protestors in Charlottesville, Va. on Aug. 12 ended with the death of one woman and left several others injured. An impromptu vigil was held on Aug. 13 in the Taos Plaza. Santa Fe and other communities around New Mexico also have held vigils, speaking out against racism and calling for unity.

Everyone in the Taos Valley and from communities around Taos County are invited to participate in tonight's vigil.
