Campers fill Kit Carson Park for Taos Vortex

Organizer lacks permit for campers

Posted

Campers began lining the eastern portion of Kit Carson Park as Meow Wolf’s Taos Vortex kicked off the three day music festival Friday (August 16).

Hundreds of tents filled both baseball fields and the areas surrounding them before night fell.

A Taos News records request for camping permits for the festival came back inconclusive and town of Taos staff said the permit for camping does not exist.

A use permit is required by any entity planning to use the park, according to the town's Public Parks Rules and Regulations for Use. This permit is issued and approved by the town facilities department.

In addition, overnight stays, along with unleashed dogs and glass containers, are among the prohibited uses in the park, according to the 2007 town policy.

Overnight camping is among the complaints of some Taos residents who are concerned with the downtown park becoming the primary concert and event venue.

This is a developing story.
