New faces at Berkshire

Chris Barone and Mark Carroll have recently joined Berkshire Hathaway's Taos team of professional real estate brokers, according to a statement from the company.

First licensed in 1991 in Florida, Barone specializes in development - residential, commercial, investment properties and acreage tracts. He brings 30 years of customer service, marketing and sales experience.

Born and raised in the U.K., Carroll is a veteran of the fast-paced and challenging London real estate market. Since swapping the English rain for Taos sunshine in 2011, he hasn't looked back, according to the press release.

Berkshire Hathaway, a full-service real estate company located in the Taos historic district, welcomes the energy and talent that Barone and Carroll bring to its award-winning office. The Taos office's qualifying broker is Joel Schantz.

Census bureau starts job selection process

The U.S. Census Bureau began the selection process on Jan. 1 for various positions in preparation for the 2020 census.

Pay rates for federal jobs increased across the nation, and all part-time applicants (up to 30 hours per week) will be able to maintain their federal benefits and assistance, such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) while working for the census. Positions pay between $15.50 and $17.50 per hour, based on county of residence, and offer flexible hours, paid training and weekly paychecks.

Once employees have been selected in January, paid training will occur in March and April. Actual enumeration of nonresponding households begins in May and will continue through early July.

The U.S. census is the largest peacetime deployment of civil servants. Census 2020 officially begins on April 1, and for the first time ever, it will offer an online response option as well as a phone option, which will make filling out the form easy, safe and secure. For more information, visit

Governor orders 12-week paid parental leave for state employees

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed an executive order Dec. 31 directing the State Personnel Office to establish a 12-week paid parental leave policy for all state employees.

This marks the first time the New Mexico state government has provided paid family leave.

"Ensuring that families have time to bond with and care for their children is incredibly important," Gov. Lujan Grisham said. "That this was not in place for state employees before is a shame, and I am proud that we are making the situation right. New Mexico state government is committed to recruiting, retaining and supporting dedicated and talented employees to serve our neighbors all across the state. It's important to me that we set a positive standard in state government, continuing to establish the state as family-friendly and taking action to ensure a healthy and responsible workplace for New Mexico state government families."

The executive order stipulates that the statewide paid parental leave policy will provide 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave following the birth or adoption of a child, running concurrently with leave under the federal Family Medical Leave Act, as applicable. The policy took effect Jan. 1 and will be implemented at all state departments and agencies over which the governor has authority.

New Mexico state government was awarded a "Family Friendly" business award for the first time ever earlier this year, receiving the Platinum Seal from Family Friendly New Mexico, a nonprofit that has been supporting and recognizing businesses that adopt family-friendly policies since 2015.

The state scored high in the categories of health support, work schedules, pay equity, diversity and inclusion, paid leave, economic support and community investment.
