Brief: Methane rule reversal sparks backlash

Posted

Continuing with a sustained effort by the administration of President Donald Trump to roll back environmental regulations created in recent years to combat climate change, the Environmental Protection Agency has proposed to scale back a rule governing methane waste.

The EPA announced the move Tuesday (Sept. 11). In its analysis, it found that changing the methane rule could save the energy industry millions of dollars but add hundreds of thousands of tons of carbon to the atmosphere.
Methane is a potent greenhouse gas.

The announcement was condemned by U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich and New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas, who have consistently spoken out about the Trump administration's energy agenda.
