Peñasco player drops one in to surpass 1,500 point mark

During Saturday night's (Feb. 8) game in Peñasco, in the third quarter, on a routine put-back under a crowded basket, Adrianna Tafoya surpassed the 1,500 point mark for her varsity career with the Peñasco Panthers.

She did not know it.

She was just playing ball, focused on the game, like in every game she has ever played in, and certainly since the 8th grade, when she first made the varsity team.

But Coach Mandy Montoya was aware, very aware, of what had just happened.

Montoya took the microphone after the conclusion of Peñasco's win over Mora, and grabbed the audience's attention as she talked about a basketball milestone being reached by a deserving player - the heart and soul of the team, the consummate teammate, a coach's dream.

Teammates began to draw close to Tafoya, who humbly realized that it was her that Montoya was going on about. When Montoya finally named her to the crowd, the gymnasium went wild with applause by both hometown Peñasco fans and also the visiting Mora fans and players, who as district rivals can attest to Tafoya's skill and steadfastness these past five seasons.

In these Northern New Mexico communities, where basketball is like a common language, excellence is readily recognized, and respect is given where it is earned. The applause went on for several minutes, as Tafoya received a small plaque and a poster commemorating the accomplishment. She used her jersey to wipe away tears, and glanced at her family standing up in the top row, and took the embraces of her teammates.

She was still as surprised as anyone.

She was just playing ball.
