Questa in prime position to finish season out with winning record

It has been a long time since the Questa girls basketball program has had winning days.

In fact, if you go to MaxPreps, you'll see that the Lady Cats (10-7, 3-0 District 5-2A) haven't been above .500 in any of the seasons that have their records accounted for.

Those records go back to the 2006-07 season, and the best record Questa has had since then came in the 2017-18 season when the girls team went 13-16 overall and made it to the state tournament before falling to Peñasco in the first round.

Questa head coach Dale Cisneros reckons that the girls basketball team haven't had a record above .500 since the '90s.

"It's one of my own personal goals," Cisneros said of having his team finish with a winning record. "We stand a chance."

But now more than ever, the reality of finishing the season out with a winning record - and even making the state tournament - is a possibility for the Lady Cats.

On Saturday (Feb. 1), in a home district showdown with Coronado, Questa showed exactly why they can be a team that is very much so capable of continuing its winning ways. The game ended in a 65-41 victory for the Lady Cats, who on many occasions played frustrating defense led by Kiana Passino and Christina Cisneros, a silent but determined player when on the court.

The Lady Cats got most of their scoring on Saturday from Leah Martinez, a player who had 19 points.

Martinez' scoring and the team's stout defense are both things that can contribute to Questa's winning ways.

"We hustled," Passino said of how her team came away with a big victory over Coronado. "I think the press helped. … We are starting to communicate better on the court."

Passino said that finishing with a winning record is important, but more than anything it's a championship.

Cisneros said "of course" that championships are on his team's mind, but winning, at least in the moment, is what's most important.

"We just want to take it one game at a time," Cisneros said. "We want to win the next game and then let the chips fall in place."

But the Lady Cats have a tough test standing in their way. On Thursday (Feb. 6), Questa will travel to Peñasco, the top team in Class 2A, for a District 5-2A match. While Questa poses one of the best district records, the Lady Panthers have already beaten the former state champion in Pecos twice, and have lost just two games overall.

"We have confidence that as long as we play together and work hard, it's a possibility [to beat Peñasco]," Passino said.

Cisneros said that at the high school basketball level, it's a game of matchups. He thinks his team and Peñasco match up well, but more than anything Cisneros just wants a victory.

"When you have a team that good, you want to beat them," Cisneros said of Peñasco.
