Avalanche crashes into house in village of Taos Ski Valley

Woman trapped inside rescued, transported to hospital

A woman inside a house on Coyote Lane in the village of Taos Ski Valley was suddenly trapped by an avalanche Wednesday afternoon (March 13).

"It was a pretty big avalanche," said Chris Stagg, vice president of Taos Ski Valley, Inc. First responders pulled the woman out from the snow inside the house. He said he was told she was briefly unconcious but seemed fine by the time paramedics  transported her to Holy Cross Medical Center in Taos.

Stagg said at least one snowboarder and maybe more likely set off the avalanche. He said snowboarders and skiers like to ride the Mine Slide slope, an old mine waste tailing pile. But it is on private land and is not part of the ski area. "Legally it's not allowed," he said.

The avalanche slid across Kachina Road, Phoenix Switchback and Twining before plowing into the house on Coyote Lane, Stagg said.

High winds Wednesday forced the ski valley to close the upper lifts. But Stagg predicted Thursday will be "super awesome" for skiers and snowboarders. "Tomorrow is going to be sunny and lots of powder," he said.
