Artist Relief, a new coalition of national arts grantmakers came together three weeks ago to protect the country’s artists in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

They have raised $10,000,000—enough to provide 100 artists with $5,000 relief grants each week between now and September.

“We’re also operating a list of resources for artists, and co-launching the COVID-19 Impact Survey for Artists and Creative Workers, designed by Research Partner Americans for the Arts, to better identify and address the needs of artists moving forward.” Adam Abdalla

President of the Cultural Counsel, writes in the press release sent to Tempo.

“The scope and speed of this coalition is unprecedented. Never before has a group of small and mid-sized arts funders organized so quickly, and with such ambition.” He continues, “as Artist Relief’s media partner, Cultural Counsel is committed to furthering this effort. Simply put, it’s the most important work we’ve ever done.”

“If you’re an artist in need,” he implores, “ I hope that you’ll apply for one of the $5,000 grants. The application only takes a few minutes. If you’re interested in sharing your story, we want to hear it. Please fill out the Impact Survey as well, which will help us better support artists moving forward.”

Practicing artists living in all fifty states, territories, and Tribal Nations, working in any discipline, are able to apply for the $5,000 grant. Applicants must be 21 or older, able to receive taxable income in the United States regardless of their citizenship status, and have generally lived and worked in the United States for the last two years.

Artists demonstrating the most severe needs will be prioritized, with an emphasis on funding widely across disciplines and geographies, as well as disability, ethnicity, and gender. Applications will be reviewed in collaboration with cultural nonprofits who will assist in the determination process.

Artist Relief is a coalition of national arts grantmakers: Academy of American Poets, Artadia, Creative Capital, Foundation for Contemporary Arts, MAP Fund, National YoungArts Foundation, and United States Artists. With $5 million in seed funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, which matched $5 million provided by foundations nationwide in initial contributions (a full list is available on our website), Artist Relief launches their project with $10 million, while organizers continue to fundraise to assist with the rapidly escalating needs of the country's artists.
