Angel Fire-Taos Blue Bus route to be permanently canceled

Posted

Travelers who relied on the Blue Bus route launched last year to connect Angel Fire to Taos will have to find another way to make the trip starting on Saturday (May 23).

The North Central Regional Transit District announced on Thursday (May 21) that the 800 Angel Fire route was shutting down permanently.

It had launched on Aug. 12, 2019 and operated on a contract basis, said Jim Nagle, public information officer for NCRTD. The route offered fare-free service, with three round trips daily seven days a week.

Nagle said the route was funded by the village of Angel Fire, with some additional financial support from Colfax County and federal grants.

"The governing body of the resort community approached NCRTD in 2019 with the interest in providing and funding a route to offer residents of Angel Fire access to services in Taos, students in Taos with access to Angel Fire schools and year-round outdoor enthusiasts with winter snow sports, mountain biking and hiking opportunities at Angel Fire Resort," read an NCRTD press release.

While Nagle said he didn't have information as to why the route is being canceled, he said all Blue Bus routes have seen ridership drop due to the coronavirus pandemic. That's partly because only five people are allowed on a bus at each time. As of this week, riders are also still required to wear masks before boarding.

Information on other routes still operating in Taos and Colfax counties can be found at ncrtd.org.
