Out with the old and in with the new. Angel Fire Resort is saying farewell to the coveted shovel races and is looking forward to its new tradition of a winter carnival.

Starting Thursday (Jan. 30) families are welcome to gather at Angel Fire Resort for the first Winter Carnival, which will transform the ski resort into a Coney Island-style amusement park.

A full-sized merry-go-round, axe throwing and other games await carnivalgoers for this all-ages event. The various rides will run from noon to 4 p.m. from Thursday to Sunday (Feb. 1), when the carnival comes to a close.

"We wanted to expand on our family activities for the weekend," said Greg Ralph, Angel Fire director of marketing.

This year's carnival will also see the end of a legacy of downhill races as the final snow shovel races take place.

For the past 40 years, Angel Fire has held the World Championship Shovel Races, which have brought hundreds of racers to the mountain to compete for the title. Racers ages 6 and up can compete for the final title in this historic race.

Shovel racing began when lift operators started riding their snow shovels down the mountain after their shifts. Since that tradition began, the event has grown to include various techniques and tricks for the speediest run down the slopes.

Despite the legacy of the sport in Angel Fire, resort communications director Krysty Ronchetti said it just isn't the draw that it used to be.

"Its just been losing interest from racers over the last several years and we are looking to do some newer events," she said.

Racers this year can compete for the final title in the sport and will hold the bragging rights as the fastest shovel racer in the world.

For the carnival, Angel Fire Resort will be offering specials for guests who are looking to stay two or more nights on the mountain.
