Opinion: Americans need a true democracy

The current population of the United States is about 327 million people.

Our homeless population is around 554,000 or somewhat over a half-million.

The United States is the richest nation on earth. We have the largest number of billionaires of any country at around 536. And, we have 4,900,000 millionaires. The U.S. budget for 2019 is $3.422 trillion dollars. This means we have substantial inequality between our richest and poorest citizens.

And, our military budget is greater than the next highest 15 countries combined.

The ultrawealthy among us often have several homes, private jets, housekeepers, you name it. And, many of these people pay no income tax at all because of the loopholes in the tax laws for the ultrarich. Our Constitution says we are a democracy, but functionally we are an aristocracy - meaning the ultrarich are running the show.

What are the minimal requirements that a true democracy should make available to all its citizens? The list includes: housing, food, clothing, medical care, child care, education, mental health care and elderly care. We may be able to vote if we are of age, but voting alone does not make us a true democracy.

Until our country makes available to all of us the requirements listed above, we will continue to be an aristocracy, ruled by the rich, and not a democracy.
