Air Force Major (Ret.) Jose Tobias (Toby) Romero died in the Lord on February 10, a couple of months shy of his 86th birthday. After a heart-related illness lasting several years, he passed away at his residence in Tucson where he lived for the past 18 years. He was born in Taos, New Mexico and grew up in Los Angeles as the eldest of three sons. He made his two-decade career in the Air Force, serving at various posts throughout the world as a "Communications Specialist", advancing to the rank of major. His parents-- Jose Tobias Romero, Sr. (Llano Quemado/Ranchos) and Maria Claudia Garcia (Arroyo Hondo) --were high school sweethearts whose roots both go back generations in northern New Mexico. After his wife Maria Claudia died, Mr. Romero became a priest and served in ministry for 22 years. Toby's uncle Tomas Romero, who earned the Distinguished Flying Cross a a Turret Ball Gunner during World War II, is buried at the Sierra Vista Cemetery in Taos, and his aunt Agnes Reynolds lives in Taos. Joan Arnold, Toby's wife of eighteen years, survives him as do his two daughters Tobina and Ruth and their mother Constance, his grandchildren including his eldest grandchild and namesake, Christopher Tobias Garcia of Los Angeles. The Mass of Resurrection, celebrated by His surviving priest-brothers, Fathers Gilbert and Juan will take place on Monday March 16th, at 10:30 AM at St. Catherine of Alexandria Church in Riverside, with reception in the parish hall following. The burial with military honors will take place at 1:15 PM at the National Cemetery in Riverside.
