¡Sanamagán, cómo había hecho frío and it was so cold que no habían any traces of the coming of spring to the valley!

¡Sanamagán, cómo había hecho frío and it was so cold que no habían any traces of the coming of spring to the valley!

Cuando los caminos no estaban slippery and icy, estaban full of all kinds of mud. Esa combinación de hielo y zoquete clung to the cars along con toda la sal que los snowplows sprinkled on the highways. The worst part era que todo ese gunk clung to the running boards de la troca como chonques that were all frozen.

Those huge chunks of muddy ice and salt no dejaban a las llantas correr bien since they scraped against the tires. Grampo Caralampio had to do something - algo para no tener any kind of an accident because of it.

"Why don't you throw una poca de boiling water en los running boards, Grampo? That might help to melt todo el ice de los estribos."

"That would take too long, m'hijo," Grampo remarked. "Yo creyo que fuera so much easier to chip away from it con el crowbar. ¿Por qué no vas al garage, m'hijo y traeme la barrita?"

Canutito went off a toda máquina and he grabbed the crowbar de la mesita and brought it back to Grampo. Pronto el grampo was chipping away the ice close to the tire. De repente he got a little distracted y en vez de picarle al running board, he slipped y le picó a la llanta con el crowbar.

"¡Sanamabísquete!" he exclaimed, cuando ponchó a la llanta and all the air came rushing out of the punctured tire y quedó toda flate. "I should have just let a esa plasta de hielo hang there hasta el verano anyway - nobody ever washes their cars aquí hasta junio porque no es más que wasted money at this time of year. Ahora voy a tener que ponerle un parche or buy a new tire."

When Grampo Caralampio got up de donde estaba sitting en pinganillas, he stretched out his legs de esa crouching position. Entonces fue que Canutito noticed that Grampo had gotten some mud en sus calzones. "I'll go get you una garra to wipe off ese zoquete from your pants," he offered generosamente.

"I don't need a rag, m'hijo," Grampo Caralampio replied, reaching for his wallet. Abrió la maleta y sacó un credit card from it.

Canutito thought que posiblemente grampo iba a ir a mercarse another tire con el Master Charge card. Pero as he watched, Grampo Caralampio started to scrape away el zoquete con el credit card.

"Ésta es la mejor cosa for getting the mud off de los lonas," he said, dusting off his blue jeans. "A veces I also use my Master Charge card para limpiarme las uñas," he said, poking the corner of the card under his fingernails. Luego se puso el rincón del credit card en su boca saying, "A veces hasta me limpio el sarro de los dientes, because you can really remove the plaque from your teeth con esta tarjeta de crédito."

"I guess que el credit card puede servir for a lot of things, ¿qué no, Grampo?" Canutito asked.

"Pus chur que sí, m'hijo," Grampo replied. "I also use it pa'quitarle la escarcha al windshield cuando está todo covered over con frost."

Toda la tarde Grampo tried to remove the flat tire del rín para ver si podía hacerla salvage pero el agujero that he had made con el crossbar que estaba tan grande que he couldn't patch it back up ni con cinco parches. No había any way of getting around it; iba a tener que comprarse otra.

Canutito helped him loosen las tuercas del hubcap and he put all the nuts en un lão de los bolts. Se subieron en la pickup truck and they went off a comprar una llanta.

Cuando llegaron al tire store, Grampo and Canutito looked around para ver which the best tires were sin ser muy expensive. Grampo Caralampio hasta estaba trying to see a ver si no le hacían un trade-in por su llanta rota pero no estaban interested en su yunque.

Al fin Grampo bought una new tire pero cuando hizo el trai de comprarla con su credit card, it wouldn't work - parecía que estaba all messed up. Tenía bits of ice, zoquete and tooth gunk all over it.
