Red River opens, TSV schedules opening day

Skiers board the chairlift at Red River Ski Area on Friday, Dec. 4.

Ski areas began their openings and formal opening day announcements this weekend, with Red River Ski Area opening Friday through Sunday (Dec. 4 - 6), and Taos Ski Valley announcing an early passholder start date of Wednesday, Dec. 9.

After the resorts got their employee COVID testing procedures approved by the state, they began to make announcements on social media. Red River Ski Area was quick to announce their next day opening on Facebook Thursday night (Dec. 3). The ski area opened with two lifts, two carpets and seven runs, and is operating with just restrooms open as of this past weekend. They said in a statement that they “will provide an update next week on our plans for lessons, rentals, and food & beverage.” Due to COVID, and Taos’ current “red level” under a state framework for reopening businesses based on case numbers, ski areas are currently opening at 25 percent capacity.

Taos Ski Valley followed shortly after, announcing on Saturday (Dec. 5) that they will be opening Dec. 9 to people who have already bought season passes, and Dec. 11 to the general public. “We look forward to seeing you out on the slopes enjoying turns in our fresh mountain air,” the ski resort said in a statement.

Both resorts cautioned skiers and riders to always heed state health protocols by maintaining six feet of physical distance from each other and always wearing masks.

Sipapu has not issued a statement regarding opening as of Sunday (Dec. 6), and Angel Fire Resort still remains on track to open Dec. 11.

This is an ongoing story. Updates will be provided as necessary.
