With backcountry skiing and snowboarding flourishing throughout the U.S. and New Mexico, a new speaker series aims it’s first session at avalanche awareness.

On Thursday, Dec. 17, The Economic Development Department’s Outdoor Recreation Division will bring speakers familiar with backcountry skiing and riding together for the first installment of their new "Dispatches from New Mexico" series. They will discuss big-mountain terrain and make sure that people are “equipped with the right knowledge and decision-making skills to keep themselves and their fellow skier and riders safe,” said a press release.

The event is put on by UNM’s International Mountain Medicine Center, the Taos Avalanche Center and the Silverton Avalanche School. Speakers from the organizations will talk to participants about the boom in backcountry snow sports enthusiasm as well as discuss avalanche safety in depth.

The Outdoor Recreation Division encourages “all businesses, individuals, employees and communities interested in learning about best practices when it comes to skiing and riding in the New Mexico backcountry to attend.”
