Angel Fire Ski Resort has delayed its opening to Dec. 17 in light of unusually warm and dry weather. Pictured: Paloma Gonzales skis a steep run named "Nitro" at Angel Fire in a previous season.

The popular ski destination Angel Fire Resort will delay opening its ski runs until Dec. 17. The resort originally planned to open on Dec. 10 but decided to move the date up due to “unseasonably warm weather.”

"While this was a hard decision for us to make, the mountain is experiencing a powerful temperature inversion that is limiting the resort's ability to make snow. Warmer than normal temperatures along the ski slopes make it challenging for the snow guns to produce quality snow," said Greg Ralph, director of marketing for the resort. "Forecasts are predicting colder temperatures and more natural snow as the storm track returns to New Mexico later next week. We know the snow is coming, and we're looking forward to offering our guests the skiing experience they're looking for."

Other ski destinations, such as Red River Ski & Summer Area have operations closed Monday through Thursday until Dec. 10. Sipapu Ski & Summer Resort slopes opened on Nov. 19. That resort announced on its website it will close until Dec. 3. Taos Ski Valley, which opened its doors on Thanksgiving day, remains open as of today, but has so far only opened two runs: Powderhorn and Pioneer.

Angel Fire Resort Membership Preview Day is now Dec. 16. The resort will be open until March 20, 2022.
