Hundreds of people participated in an afternoon parade celebrating the Taos Tigers football team state championship today (Dec. 21).

Students, family members, teachers, school administrators, local politicians, business owners, community members and even visitors lined the parade route on Paseo del Pueblo to cheer the Taos Tigers football team for winning their first-ever championship.

The parade culminated in the Historic Taos Plaza for a ceremony marked by speeches congratulating the players and the coaches. In an awards-style ceremony, the Certificates of Outstanding Performance were presented to individual team members by name. The certificates were signed by Taos Mayor Dan Barrone and the insciprtion read in part: "On behalf of the citizens of Taos... with sincere apprecation."

When the certificate was handed to Coach Art Abreu, Jr. , the crowd roared with applause and chanted: "Speech! Speech! Speech!"

Thanking his family, the players and the coaching staff, he said, "The journey has been nothing short of remarkable."
