Morgan Timms/Taos News

Taos Center Kelly Tonrey attempts to take possession of the ball Saturday (March 20) during Taos' 2-0 win against Academy for Technology and The Classics at Taos Eco Park.

The New Mexico High School Coaches Association announced the roster for the 2020/21 All-State Soccer teams. Taos made a strong showing this year, with six players making the team.

This was a significant boost from 2019, when Taos High School landed just two players (Alex Waggoner and Aidan Heflin, both of whom returned to the list this year.) Five of the players came from the boys' team and one, star mid-fielder Kelly Tonrey, from the girls' team.

According to the NMHSCA, "Athletes are chosen through a thorough process, which includes nominations by head coaches, ranking of nominations through a coach's ballot, and a final selection committee chosen by the NMHSCA Board of Directors."

The NMHSCA has been producing All-State rosters since 2019 and include: volleyball, football, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls basketball, and softball.

2020/21 NMHSCA All State Soccer Team (First and Second):

First Defender Ricky Nichols

First Forward/Striker Alex Waggoner

First Mid-Fielder Aidan Heflin

Second Defender Sam Hastings

Second Mid-Fielder Teva Leshem

Second Mid-Fielder Kelly Tonrey
