Peñasco volleyballers win two, lose one on the road

Peñasco Panthers had a busy volleyball week and won two of three games.

Peñasco 24 25 25 25

McCurdy 26 15 23 17

Peñasco versus McCurdy

Team played with confidence and their serves were on, which makes a big difference in how the game will go, for us anyway. Everyone contributed in way or another. We made a few mistakes in the first set that were costly and lost. As a team, they shook it off and took care of business the next three sets. Jennifer Aguilar had a great serving night racking up 30 points. She was helped by Leandra Romero, who contributed 16, Adrianna Tafoya with 15, Ariana MacCauley, 13, Marcela MacCauley, 15, and Carly Gonzales with 7.

Romero played the back line well and her confidence was high. Carly Gonzales took the reins at setter and had 20 assists, 4 kills and 5 tips. She's all around, but setter is where I see her confidence shine through.

Ariana MacAuley was awesome at the net, she had 16 kills for the night and 2 blocks. Marcela MacAuley contributed 3 kills and 3 blocks, Adrianna Tafoya had 6 kills.

Dulce 25 25 25

Peñasco 12 15 15

Peñasco versus Dulce

As you can tell by the scores it was a lack luster performance. We never had the chance to get going. Dulce is tough, there's a reason they rank as #1 in the coaches poll. Adrianna Tafoya 11 points, Ariana MacAuley 9 points, Jennifer Aguilar 6 points, Marcela MacAuley 3 points, Leandra 4 points, Naomi Snake 5 points. Alexandria Sandoval, had 7 pass assists. As a team we had 8 kills. Big difference from Tuesday night. Playing a team like Dulce helps us get better. Dulce's Coach Kathleen Salazar shared some sound advice. Now we just have to implement it and take care of business.

Peñasco 25 25 25

Cimarron 19 21 21

Peñasco versus Cimarron

We were able to bounce back from the night before vs. Dulce. The girls were more relaxed and they played their game. The line up changed as did our setter. Jennifer Aguilar took over against Cimarron and did a great job. She had 6 assists, 2 kills and 2 blocks. Aguilar's sets were there because our passes were on point. Ariana MacAuley had 7 pass assists and 7 kills. Adrianna Tafoya 10 assists, Alexandria Sandoval 10 pass assists. Because our serves were solid it helped with how the girls played. It was a good week for us.

Maxine Abeyta is head coach of the Peñasco Panther volleyball squad.

Next up for the Panthers:

Tuesday, (Sept 24): vs Cuba in Peñasco, after this section went to press

Sept 30: vs Monte del Sol in Santa Fe

Oct 1: vs Mora in Mora
