A case of symmetry occurred to the Taos Tigers and the Lady Tigers this past week in separate basketball tournaments: They both fell short of winning their respective championship games.

The Lady Tigers had the more heartbreaking loss as they held the lead for almost all of the fourth quarter against the Española Valley Sundevils.

With under a minute to go, Española’s Analysa Pacheco fouled Marika Moyer, sending her to the free throw line. She would make one out of those two free throws, giving the Lady Tigers a 54-52 lead. After a timeout Española’s Joni Martinez hit a clutch 3-pointer to win the game and the 2021 Lady Horsemen Christmas Tournament for the Sundevils.

Before losing to the Belen Eagles on Wednesday Dec. 29, the Taos Tigers boy's basketball team played a couple of close games (with the exception of the fourth quarter against the Socorro Warriors) to reach the final round of the Stu Clark Tournament.

The game against Belen was close but not in favor of Taos. The Eagles were bent on denying everything and stifling the Tigers every step of the way. They were pesky on defense. Center Daniel Corrales set the tone by getting a steal off of an entry pass from Nathaniel Gutierrez intended for Elden Torres. He’d also go on to score 25 points, nab 15 rebounds, and get a block down low. Brody Jaquez was also active on defense as he deflected six passes. Even though the Tigers struggled from the field, shooting 38 percent overall, and 22 percent from beyond the arc, they hung around within reach till the final whistle. The Tigers lost 51-57 to the Eagles.
