The Taos High School Tigers capped off their season last week with a pair of victories. The boys defeated the Moriarty Pintos in their final game, 61-32 (a virtual repeat of the teams' last meeting April 20, which ended in a 68-31 win for THS.) The girls did the same, taking down the Pintos, 46-36.
The boys Tigers ended their 2020 Spring Season with a 5-3 district record (9-3 overall.) The record was good enough for 2nd place in District 4A. The team finished behind Española Valley, whose staggering defense and potent offense led to two of the Tigers' three losses on the season. The team's leading scorer this year was Junior Anthony Padilla with 14.3 points per game. Breakout star Daemon Ely lead the team on the defensive end with an impressive 9.6 rebounds per game. Both stats place these players well above the national average of 5.1 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.
The girls Tigers went out roaring as well. In what proved to be a rough and tumble defensive struggle, THS finished off Moriarty in their final game of the season. The Tigers held the Pintos to just 4 points in the third quarter.
The team finished 6-2 in district and 8-4 out of district after a rocky start to the season saw the Tigers sitting on a 3-3 record in mid-April. But a late season rally that included a four-game winning streak boosted the Tigers to a second place finish.
