Peñasco Baseball preview

Off to a favorable start, the Panthers begin their spring sports schedule with a win against the Alacranes from Tierra Encantada (Santa Fe). Peñasco played a double-header against Class 3A Clayton Yellowjackets after this section went to press March 20. Although listed as a "home" game, the games against Clayto were played at a neutral site to alleviate travel time for both squads.

Dominic Lopez heads into his third season as the head coach of the Peñasco Panther baseball team. With eight returning players, coach Lopez now has the opportunity to reflect on "how much they've grown."

In spite of the fact that the very young team has only one senior, "it's the most experience on the team we've had in years," he said. "Hopefully we can all come together as a team."

Due to the snow, the team has been stuck inside for training so far this season, but official practices are only now starting. Assistant coach Henry Lopez is "a big help, really dedicated."

Athletes know that what they do outside of practice matters, too. "It will be interesting to see which ones step up and do a little work on their own," said coach Dominic Lopez.

"I have a lot of faith in them. They can do a lot."
