The Peñasco Lady Panthers closed out their district season 10-0, beating the Mora Rangerettes 63-42 at home on Friday (March 1), for the District 5-2A championship.

Four of the Lady Panthers - Alaska Lopez, Bianca Contreras, Carly Gonzales and Adrianna Tafoya - were selected for the All-District team, and Coach Gilbert Mascareñas was awarded District Coach of the Year.

The Lady Panthers go into the post season 24-3. Their number two seed allows them to avoid Texico, the top-ranked 2A team in the state, until and unless both Peñasco and Texico make it to the finals.

Peñasco hosts the 17-10 McCurdy Lady Bobcats on Friday (March 8) at 6 p.m. The Lady Bobcats went undefeated in their district, District 2.

Both teams are enjoying extended winning streaks - 10 for McCurdy and 15 for Peñasco, but only one of them can go on to play the winner of the Clayton versus Alamo Navajo game on Wednesday (March 12) at 8 a.m. at the Santa Ana Star Center. The winner of that game goes on to the semi-final March 14 at 6:30 p.m., also at the Santa Ana Star Center, and the girls class 2A state championship final is March 15 at 5 p.m. at Dreamstyle Arena in Albuquerque.
