In September 1985, a comment made by Bob Dylan during the Live Aid Benefit earlier that summer became the unlikely catalyst for Farm Aid, as well as the singer's first outing with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Dylan had taken the Philadelphia stadium stage for Live Aid, the mega-benefit organized to raise funds for Ethiopian famine relief. Between songs, Dylan mused: Couldn't some of the money be used to help American farmers?
