Honoring veterans of Taos and Colfax counties

Morgan Timms/Taos News

Veterans and their families sing the National Anthem during the annual Veterans Day ceremony on Taos Plaza in 2019. Most ceremonies have been canceled or will be held virtually in 2020 due to the pandemic. Taos News invites residents of Taos and Colfax counties to send in photos and descriptions of their veterans by Monday (Nov. 9) at 4 p.m. to be published next week.

Veterans Day is Wednesday (Nov. 11). Taos News wants to honor veterans of Taos and Colfax counties in the Nov. 12 edition of the paper.

Do you have a family member or friend who is a veteran? Send us a photo and a paragraph with their name, branch of military service, when and where they served, and something about their time in the military. Photos should be as high a resolution as possible. Email or text the photos and description to editor@taosnews.com or 505-470-9843.

Deadline is Monday at 4 p.m.

November 11 was originally designated as "Armistice Day",

An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday—a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as "Armistice Day."

Then on June 1, 1954 House Resolution HR7786 was passed, changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day. In light of restoring a recognition of Peace being as important as War, would the Taos News consider honoring peace activists as well as war activists?
