On behalf of True Kids 1 and Taos Municipal Schools, I would like to thank our community for your extraordinary support of local families during our recent laptop fundraising drive.
In the campaign, over $70,000 was raised through contributions by more than 40 individuals and foundations. This allowed Taos Municipal Schools to purchase 100 MacBook Air laptops for students.
True Kids 1 is continuing our efforts to collaborate with local partners and Taos Municipal Schools to support New Mexico families during this tumultuous time. We are especially grateful to the LOR Foundation for funding our pursuit of state, federal and institutional stimulus monies to provide essential resources such as internet connectivity, additional devices, professional development and program support for our students, teachers and families.
This will build on the success of the laptop drive and the work by Kit Carson and AT&T to create hot spots throughout our rural communities.
As state education departments and school districts around the country grapple with the best ways to safely engage students this fall, we are grateful to have such dedicated school and community leaders serving our Northern New Mexico communities. Dr. Lillian Torrez has created a special task force to address these challenges.
I'm confident that we will all work together to find creative solutions that prioritize inclusiveness, access to resources and the physical, mental and emotional health of students and teachers.
In this spirit, we invite anyone who is interested in helping our community respond to the educational challenges of COVID-19 to reach out to us. Efforts by individuals such as Larry Mapes from Valverde Energy and the Taos County Chamber of Commerce have shown how much can be achieved by local citizens who step up into a leadership role. Larry has contributed personal protective equipment for front line workers and was also invaluable in his networking for the laptop drive.
Thanks again, Taos! In difficult times we really see what a caring, talented and generous community we have. Let's continue to collaborate to help ensure that everyone is able to thrive together, even as we're keeping our distance.
Rosey Hayett is the executive director for True Kids 1.
